Community members demand City Council defund Phoenix Police and pressure MCAO to drop all charges

Today, community members will demand that the Phoenix City Council stop creating new measures to avoid police accountability and instead, take action against the Phoenix Police Department’s targeting of Black Lives Matter protesters. This comes after weeks of continuous evidence that the department’s officers celebrated shooting a man in the groin by creating a neo-Nazi commemorative coin, lied under oath in order to help prosecute activists as a criminal street gang (charges which the County Attorney’s Office now had to dismiss), and were caught on duty saying they would like to “gas” and “stomp” on them

WHAT:       Community members demand City Council defund Phoenix Police, not prevent measures for police accountability (agenda items #81 & #000)

WHEN:       Formal City Council Meeting – Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at 2:30 p.m.

WHERE:     Online meeting

In addition to public comments, Mass Liberation AZ alongside community organizations such as Black Lives Matter – Phoenix Metro, Poder in Action, and the People’s Law Firm, will be submitting nine citizen petitions demanding the City enact resolutions to hold the Phoenix Police Department and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office accountable for their actions. These resolutions include calling for a full independent investigation and the dismissal of all personnel involved in these false charges.
