BLACK AUGUST 2023

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Have you or a loved one experienced what it's like to go through the criminal court system? Are you a legal student or interested in the legal process? Are you tired of years of state violence administered through the criminal justice system? Join MLAZ for our upcoming court watch training and events to learn more about our continued work around prosecutor accountability and how you can become part of our court watching squad.
We're creating a space for abolitionists to find community in Pima County! Join us if you're looking to build a muscle around what abolition is and how it shows up in everyday life in this more casual version of MLAZ's 'Let's Talk Abolition' series. During this special session of the Pima County Abolitionist Book Club, in honor of Black August, we will be reading Michelle Alexander's seminal work on race and mass incarceration: The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness (2010).

Black August began in the 1970s by Black people incarcerated in California prisons to honor imprisoned writer and revolutionary George Jackson, one third of the Soledad Brothers, who was assassinated by prison guards in 1971 during a historic rebellion at San Quentin prison.

The month commemorates the histories of Black resistance–from the Haitian Revolution, Nat Turner’s Rebellion, to the Watts’ Uprising and the March on Washington, or more recently, the Ferguson Uprising and the Pine Prairie ICE Hunger Strike. Yet Black August has suffered from erasure outside Black Liberation circles.

For us at Mass Liberation AZ, Black August is a month of study, reflection, memorial, and action for all those committed to Black liberation and abolition. We look at this month every year as a time to:

  • Lift up the stories of Black abolitionist leaders/thinkers
  • Commemorate the history of our struggle
  • Memorialize the resistance & resilience of Black freedom fighters & this movement
  • Invite community to tangible work and action
